IKT, Kommunikation, Mediestudier og Journalistik

The programme is concerned with the study of information and communication technology, mediated communication, experience culture and journalism. The programme includes academic environments from Institute of Information and Media Studies, the Scandinavian Institute, Institute of Language, Literature and Culture, the Institute of History and Area Studies, the Institute of Aesthetic Studies and the Centre for University Studies in Journalism. The field is studied from a wide array of approaches. The focus may be on reception and use, historical dimensions, innovation and design processes, on production, aesthetics, analysis of specific products and events, on journalistic ideals and practices, and on social and cultural contexts.
The programme comprises three areas of emphasis: First of all, research is done in Technology Studies – the social role (STS), design, construction and implementation of technology at work, in recreational activities and art, and in learning environments. Interactive design is a new area in this context. Other more recent, active areas are, for instance, computer games, audio design, branding, tourism, digital aesthetics and art. Second, research is carried out in the media themselves, media and event culture (including experience economy), media theory and media in society. And finally, research is undertaken in journalism’s social role, development possibilities and notions of quality, including public service.
Already established positions of strength in these research areas are seen, for instance, in the form of centres, including the Centre for Internet Research, the Centre for Advanced Visualisation and Interaction (CAVI), the Centre for Science, Technology and Society Studies, the Digital Aesthetics Research Centre and the Centre for IT and Learning.
In addition, the programme collaborates with a number of doctoral schools, of which BRICS2 is an international doctoral school that bridges the gap between the humanities and computer sciences. FMKJ is a national doctoral school associated with an extensive Scandinavian network and valuable European and international contacts.
The courses offered in Part B of the study programme will normally be taught in English.
